Car Inspection
Before you commit to taking over a car lease it is important that you get the vehicle inspected so you have a clearer idea of its condition. The initial contract with the vehicle dealership stipulates that everything that is considered as normal wear-and-tear for the vehicle is not to be charged to the lessee. This means that whatever falls outside of normal wear-and-tear could become your responsibility as the new owner.
First, you should always take someone with you to inspect the vehicle who has minimal knowledge of car mechanics. Not only will this give you more information about the condition of the car, but it will also give you an unbiased opinion, given that the person is not a part of the transaction.
When you meet with the seller for the first time, check the paint, verify the space between the panels and check that the joints are in good condition. If any of the preceding seems uneven, it could be a sign of a past accident.
Next, test-drive the vehicle. Make sure you simulate realistic driving conditions and, if possible, your everyday usage of the car. Choose a route that you might normally take to work, for instance. Politely ask the seller of the vehicle not to talk to you while you are driving to ensure that you hear any unusual sounds that might indicate a problem. If you have questions about the vehicle – ask the seller.
Ask the seller for the repair history of the vehicle. This will give you a good idea of the cost of general repairs and what may also still need to be done.
Finally, ask permission from the seller to have the car inspected by an expert. If the seller refuses you should not go any further with the transaction. If the seller accepts, have the vehicle inspected at a garage that you trust, such as a Canadian Tire, a CAA mechanical inspection center, a CAA certified garage or at a garage accredited by the Automobile Protection Association (APA). The cost of the inspection will vary from one location to another but remember that the cost is a good investment and could save you a great deal of money in unforeseen repair costs.
